How can you help me with breastfeeding?

I can help you address a variety of issues that you and/or your baby are experiencing during feeds. These include nipple soreness/pain, latching difficulties, tongue/lip/buccal tie evaluation, milk supply concerns, pumping, bottle feeding, plugged ducts/mastitis, etc. My goal is always to address the needs of the parent, baby, and dyad. I often refer out to other providers who can act as part of the healthcare team — from pediatric chiropractors and cranial sacral therapists to pediatric ENTs and dentists.

What is an IBCLC?

IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. This title reflects a rigorous certification process that includes clinical experience, a board exam, annual continuing education courses, and re-certification every 5 years. International Board Certified Lactation Consultants represent the highest level of standardized lactation care globally.

What happens during a lactation consult?

Lactation consults last 1-2 hours and include a detailed maternal/baby health history. They almost always include an observation and assessment of a full breastfeed, position and latch support, a weighted feed on a medically calibrated scale to assess baby’s milk transfer, an oral assessment on baby, a breast exam, and educational topics pertinent to infant feeding. All consults include a personalized care plan that includes my clinical recommendations, and two-weeks of unlimited follow-up and support via email and/or text.

How is your fee determined?

My fee is determined by a number of factors: it falls within standard rates for other IBCLCs in my region, includes our time together during a consult, two-weeks of unlimited email and/or text support following our consult, detailed electronic charting, a pediatrician report sent directly to the physician, a personalized plan of care, and a superbill for you to submit directly to your insurance for hopeful reimbursement.

Are you in-network with my insurance?

As of May 15, 2020, I am now an in-network provider with AETNA PPO/EPO plans. Most AETNA plans cover six lactation visits per calendar year with no out of pocket cost to you. In light of Covid-19 distancing needs, AETNA is now covering virtual telehealth services.

If you have an AETNA PPO plan and you have confirmed your lactation benefit, call me directly to book an appointment.

You can also check coverage for 6 free visits through Lactation Network (see my “Insurance” page for more information).

For any non-Aetna PPO plans or for plans not billed by Lactation Network, I provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.  Payment in full is due at the time of service. Reimbursement quantity is not determined by me but by your individual insurance company and policy.

Anything I should do to prepare for a consult?

If possible, please try not to feed baby within 1.5 hours of the start of our consult so that baby is eager to feed after our initial conversation and assessment.
